Home in a Jar
Every jar of Amina's Recipe holds a journey spanning thousands of miles; from the ancient Silk Road of Xinjiang, China, to the vibrant street food stalls of Malaysia, and finally to our kitchen in Seattle.
We are the first and only chili garlic sauce in the US fusing authentic Uyghur generational recipes with the influence of Malaysian sambal-making techniques. But before it was a brand, it was simply a mother's cure for homesickness.
Who is Amina
Amina is an Uyghur woman, a single mother of two, and the heart behind every jar.
Originally from Xinjiang in Northwest China, she migrated to Malaysia in 2009 and raised her family there for a decade. In her new Southeast Asian home, the rich, slow-cooked depth of Malaysian sambal became a staple in her kitchen and was a big part of her cooking.
Amina began blending the bold, aromatic spices of her Uyghur heritage. Recipes passed down through three generations — with the sambal-making techniques she mastered in Malaysia. The result was something entirely unique: a chili garlic sauce with the soul of Xinjiang and the heart of Malaysia.
How It Started: A Cure for Homesickness
In 2019, Amina and her oldest daughter Nafisa moved to the United States.
As new immigrants navigating a unfamiliar world, the transition was hard. During the height of the pandemic, Nafisa fell ill. Other than wanting to feel better, she missed the taste of home. The comforting spices of Xinjiang and the vibrant heat of Malaysia she'd grown up with for 10 years. And no chili products in the US can fill her homesickness.
So to comfort her daughter, Amina went to the kitchen and recreated her signature fusion sauce for the first time since arriving in America.
When Nafisa tasted it, it was an instant remedy.
They started sharing small batches with friends and family. Soon, jars were being passed around the dinner table until scraped clean. People even asked to buy half-empty jars just to take the flavor home.
That "aha moment" sparked Amina's Recipe.
Around the same time, Amina was diagnosed with osteoarthritis. Witnessing the hardship her family faced as new immigrants, Nafisa made a decision to become the Founder of Amina's Recipe to share the recipe her mother had passed down to her and turn it into something that could support them both.
